There is something to be said for post and beam construction, simple layouts and unfinished wooden interiors. These houses capture the simplicity of design and finish level that we will need to strive for on the 100k house. Check out the sited links for more images and commentary. You may notice some of these homes from the “25 houses under 1500 Square Feet” book or others in the same series of books.

I love the sleeping loft that is practically hidden above the main living area in this one! Go to this post for more images.

Yeah, I’m madly in love with that little Porch House. It’s a very pure, honest, simple design. ARCHTEAM is good.
They are very good indeed. I love how the functional elements (in this case the beams) are serving multiple functions as bookshelves as well as simply being beautiful. Designing elements to serve double or triple duty is a great way to reduce costs without sacrificing design.
I also love the concept of small sleeping lofts similar to the ones pictured in the porch house for the 100k house. They can free up valuable floor space in a small home, provide the ability to have a room mate or children without adding additional square footage. It could also eliminate the need for a dedicated guest room or area. When the relatives come to visit, simply turn your master bedroom into the guest bedroom and sleep in your comfy loft for a couple nights.
